London 2012 News
• A report into LOCOG by the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012 (CSL) found that the group had put processes in place to “ramp up” sustainable procurement throughout 2010. It follows a CSL review into LOCOG last year, which said the organisation was not ready to face challenges such as the sheer diversity and volume of its supply chain.
• A £1 million fund available to third sector organisations that help the UK live more sustainably has been announced by Environment Minister Dan Norris. The Inspiring Sustainable Living fund is part of Defra’s responsibility to deliver the Government’s commitment to use the power of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to inspire sustainable living. The funding will be made available to groups who can demonstrate they have the ability to deliver initiatives creating behavioural change, and that they have the reach to do this at a grassroots and community level. Click Here for further information.
• Greenwich Council’s Planning Committee has approved the temporary use of land at Greenwich Park, the National Maritime Museum, the Old Royal Naval College and Blackheath Circus Field, for the London 2012 Equestrian and Modern Pentathlon events. Once the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are over, the site will be restored to its former use and condition in full accordance with a Site Reinstatement Plan to be agreed by Greenwich Council, in consultation with the Royal Parks and other statutory bodies.
• A deal which clears up ownership of the Olympic Park in East London has finally been struck after "a long and complex negotiation". The agreement with the Government will see the land owned by the London Development Agency (LDA) switched to the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC). They are in charge of the legacy projects and making the site in Stratford, economically viable after the 2012 Games, including finding a use for the Olympic Stadium. A new OPLC website has been launched (Click Here), setting out the development opportunities available under the project.
• Family housing on the Olympic site would require a ‘different level of land remediation’ than had already been carried out, according to Baroness Ford, chair of the Olympic Park Legacy Company. She was responding to a question from London Assembly Member, Jenny Jones. Either the Legacy Company or the house builders will carry out this extra remediation work. Peter Bishop, deputy chief executive of the London Development Agency, said: "Decontamination was carried out to the
5
required standards at the time. What we can't rule out is that the standard will change and secondly depending on the (legacy) proposals it's possible future work may be needed but it's not something we are anticipating."
• The London 2012 Canoe Slalom venue is on course - the Broxbourne White Water Canoe Centre will include a 300m competition course, a 160m intermediate/training course and a 10,000sq m lake. This lake will feed a system of pumps that will provide water for the competition course. The white water will be created by these pumps and obstacles placed in the course. The construction of the Broxbourne White Water Canoe Centre is being carried out by Morrison Construction and the project includes funding from Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, the East of England Development Agency (EEDA) and Sport England.
Other Major Sports Projects
• Brazil’s São Paulo region, the country’s economic powerhouse, has introduced a Green Finance initiative, aimed at funding business projects which reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve recycling and waste management, and improve energy efficiency. For more information Click Here (in Portuguese).
• To celebrate World Water Day, Rio de Janeiro State Company of Water and Sewage (Cedae) have released their new Program for Environmental Education in schools. World Water Day was created by the United Nations Organization (UNO) in 1992. The objective of Cedae’s program is to make children aware at a young age about the need to use water in a rational and economic way. The promotion of educational projects focussing on the environment was one of the commitments of Rio de Janeiro’s successful candidature for the 2016 Olympic Games.
Sponsor Activity
• Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson has given her backing to a new initiative to turn ParalympicsGB into a truly ‘Green Team’ in their preparations for the London 2012 Paralympic Games. ParalympicsGB will work with London 2012 Sustainability Partner EDF Energy in order to make all their training preparation camps for the London 2012 Paralympic Games more sustainable, reducing the environmental impact of the camps and influencing the behaviour of athletes and coaches.

• TOP Olympic sponsor Coca-Cola has started to roll out 260 recycling bins across central London as part of its efforts for the Olympic Games in London in 2012. The soft drinks giant has partnered with Westminster City Council to install the units to help recycle some of the 11,000 tonnes of waste that gets thrown away in the capital every day. Coca-Cola claims the deal marks its biggest recycling collaboration to date
Collateral Projects
• The London Thames Gateway Development Corporation (LTGDC) has signalled Bromley by Bow a high priority in its plans to regenerate east London. Bromley by Bow, one of the most deprived areas in the country, fragmented and divided by main roads and rail lines, is one of the areas earmarked for change, in particular 14 acres of underused, industrial land between the A12 and the River Lea near Three Mills. Chief Executive, Peter Andrews confirmed that compulsory purchase orders have been served on land owners in the area.
• Major work has started at DP World London Gateway, the UK’s new deep sea port and logistics park, situated 25 miles east of Central London on the River Thames. The works will include dredging and reclaiming land from the Thames Estuary to allow the world’s largest container ships to bring consumer goods closer to the point of consumption than existing major national deep water ports. London Gateway will now be exhibiting at Multimodal 2010, the national freight transportation and logistics exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham in April where it will be releasing new information about the project.

Conclusions:
The London 2012 project is at an incredibly busy and exciting phase of its lifecycle right now. We can see a shift in procurement activity taking place, with tender invitations now appearing which cover the overlay, fitout and Games-time operations (such as Ticketing, Catering, Translation Services, Mascots). Meanwhile, when we look at contract awards, these are overwhelmingly still covering the construction sector, from buyers including BAM Nuttall, Balfour Beatty and Skanska. LOCOG’s rate of contract awards is also starting to pick up.
Other major sports projects are reaching their ‘delivery point’ during 2010. We have just seen Vancouver host the highly successful 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. South Africa will host the FIFA World Cup in June, Singapore’s Youth Olympic Games takes place in August, and finally the 2010 Commonwealth Games will be in Delhi during October. The completion of these projects will cast the spotlight more and more brightly on London 2012 as the next global sports event. Meanwhile Brazil, the hosts of the next World Cup in 2014 and the Rio 2016 Olympics, is experiencing a deluge of missions by businesses from countries around the world, all keen to be involved in these major opportunities.
Don’t miss out on the forthcoming series of 2012 Business Opportunity workshops – the next events will be held on the 20th and 22nd April (see the ‘Forthcoming Events’ section above). If you want to know what opportunities are available with London 2012 and where to find them, you need to be there!
If you are looking for contract opportunities with the 2012 Games it is vital to register and publish your details on the CompeteFor portal. The system has now become the main method of releasing tender opportunities, not only for the Olympics authorities, but increasingly by supply-chain contractors, and is also being used for many non-2012 opportunities.
The URL for the system is: www.competefor.com

Companies operating in the construction sector and which are looking to supply the Lend Lease Athletes Village programme, have an additional opportunity source – the ‘Village Supply Chain’ portal.
